This is the moment a female cop runs over an elderly woman crossing the road at a zebra crossing later saying she mixed up the accelerator pedal with the brakes.

The accident took place in the city of Ciudadela in the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina, when the female police officer, was driving a red pickup truck belonging to her partner. 

In the video, captured by a CCTV camera, the elderly woman, who has not been named in reports, can be seen walking across the zebra crossing when the the red pickup truck being driven by the uniformed cop turns towards her.

Instead of waiting for the woman to cross the road the driver suddenly accelerates into her, sending her crashing to the ground before bringing the vehicle to a halt.

Onlookers rush to help the victim and the female driver gets out of the car.

Local media report there were no serious injuries in the incident.

The female police officer reportedly said she was unfamiliar with driving her boyfriends car and had made a mistake. She said she had mixed up the accelerator with the brake pedal, according to local media.

The accident was witnessed by other two uniformed police officers but it is not known whether an investigation has been opened or if any arrests have been made.

Online commentator ‘Caolina Gomes’ said: “The use of guns and cars for police should be forbidden.”

Other netizens however left sexist comments such as ‘Naan Sotelo’ who said: “Why do you allow women to drive?” and ‘Dario Chachich’ wrote: “The real accident was letting her leave the kitchen.”
