The viral video with over four million views show a woman staging a protest by occupying her dead neighbour’s freshly dug grave after the funeral procession went past her house at the rear instead of at the front, breaking local tradition.

The bizarre event happened in the village of Liuzhu in Yangxi Town in Central China’s Hunan Province where the superstitious pensioner’s neighbours were preparing to bury their dead relative.

According to a village official, the elderly homeowner making the protest gave specific instructions for the funeral processions to pass in front of her home instead of behind it.

This is reportedly due to her superstitions and staunch adherence to local customs, where death and funerals are seen as taboo and must be given customary treatment lest they lead to bad luck.

The pensioner reportedly lost her temper when her dead neighbour’s casket was carried past the back of her house instead of the front entrance.

The incident lead to an argument with the family which resulted in her carrying out the most unusual of protests – climbing into the deceased’s freshly dug grave.

Officials said they went out to the village to help the families settle the dispute.

Charges are not expected to be filed against the homeowner.
