This is the bizarre moment a woman was caught on camera driving through a city with a baby on her lap.

Another motorist spotted the tot, who looked less than a year old, sitting up and looking out of the driver’s side window.

The man said he could not believe his eyes when he saw the baby in the city of Tyumen in south-central Russia’s Tyumen Oblast region.

He grabbed his smartphone and caught up with the woman, driving alongside her white car, to capture her actions on film.

The man, who did not reveal his name, said he would not be handing over the footage to the police.

But he posted it on social media where he said he hoped the reaction would be sufficient to make her think again before repeating the risky manoeuvre.

He said: “I made this video this afternoon outside the traffic police building.

“The child is very small. He should be in a car seat, not on his mother’s knees. Yes, even behind the wheel!”

He added that the woman was clearly distracted by her baby and said other motorists were shouting at her because of her erratic driving.

The video sparked a lively debate on social media where online commentators criticised the women saying she should face a fine – or even have her baby taken from her.

There is no report on whether police are investigating the incident or even aware of the video.

Founded in 1586, Tyumen was the first Russian settlement in Siberia and remains one of the country’s most important centres east of the Ural Mountains.
