This is the shocking moment a university student is rammed from behind by a speeding car and sent flying through the air as the vehicle crashes into a tree.

The incident was filmed by a CCTV camera in the area of Jogeshwari in Mumbai, formerly Bombay, a densely populated city on India’s west coast located in the state of Maharashtra.

The victim has been identified as Sayali Rane and she is reportedly in a serious condition after the collision.

Rane, a student at a nearby university, was on her way home from class when the speeding car struck.

In the CCTV footage, Rane is seen crossing the road while looking at her phone.

The speeding car suddenly appears from behind her and clatters into the student, sending her flying into the air.

Meanwhile, the white hatchback crashes head-on into a tree at speed and spins into the middle of the road on two wheels.

According to local media, Rane was rushed to a nearby hospital and is said to be in a serious condition.

The out-of-control driver was also seriously injured in the accident.

Both are receiving medical treatment as an investigation into the accident gets underway.

The horror smash came just before the new year and has reportedly stunned Rane’s family.

According to local media, the rate of traffic accidents is sharply rising in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.
