This is the hilarious moment that a lazy sea lion was caught on camera helping himself to a fishing boat's catch from a dockside crate of fish.

The Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) clearly could not be bothered to catch its own supper.

It was filmed by an eyewitness with a smartphone at the docks in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in north-eastern Russia's Kamchatka Krai region.

The footage shows the huge sea lion standing on its rear flippers on the dockside to reach into a crate full of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and help itself.

It repeatedly dips its head into a crate and re-emerges with a mouth full of fresh fish which it gobbles up in no time before going back for more.

Passersby said it did not seem to mind an audience, being far too interested in the large and unattended catch it had found.

The footage of the opportunist fish thief is proving popular with viewers after being posted on video-sharing websites.

Netizen ‘Arrgh Grogh’ said: "Look how huge his face is. He thinks he's the smartest one out there."

And ‘Aksel Alemaa’ added: "This guy definitely knows where the good stuff is!"

Stellers are the largest of the sea lions and they have an appetite to match.

The near-threatened species is named after naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller who first described them in 1741.
