This is the moment a thief makes the sign of the holy cross just seconds before stealing a Christ cross from a church.
The video was recorded by the CCTV cameras of the San Felipe de Jesus church in the colony of Nuevo Repueblo, in the city of Monterrey, in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon.
It was posted online by the church on their social media page to inform their followers about the theft of the Christ and to ask them to pray for him.
The video was accompanied by this message saying: "Praying for this son of God who after making the sign of the holy cross he stole the recumbent Christ."
The video shows how the alleged thief is in the church and approaches the place where the recumbent Christ was. He opened the glass door of the display cabinet and before picking up the statue, he makes the sign of the holy cross, leaving somewhat clumsily as he struggles with the cross.
According to local media, the statue was recovered but the church asked citizens to take care of the temple and also announced the church will be closed for security reasons. The organisation also informed that they will set up more security measures.
The video was commented on by netizens such as ‘La Adry Vega’ who said: "what a good thing the image was recovered. We should not leave so bad the church for those reasons."
The story of this bizarre theft was published in Mexican media and even in Peruvian media, and both stated how strange it was that the thief was religious, crossing himself.
