This is the dramatic moment two workmen were left dangling high above the ground after a suspending platform collapsed while they were painting a block of flats.

The accident was caught on camera by an eyewitness with a smartphone in the city of Barranquilla in northern Colombia's department of Atlantico.

Neighbours said that the painters almost fell from the platform when it suddenly collapsed after one of the cables came loose.

One of the men was left hanging from a security cable and the other one from the remains of the platform.

The video footage shows someone inside the building trying to pull one of the workers to safety through a bathroom window.

Another man then appears in a window on the next floor and tries to help the other man.

Eventually they managed to help both men scramble through the small windows to safety.

Eyewitnesses had earlier called the emergency services who sent fire crews to the scene, in the Los Alpes area of the city, to try to rescue the men.

But by the time they arrived, the painters had already been rescued by the people inside the building.

Barranquilla is the largest city and port on northern Colombia's Caribbean coast.
