This is the tragic moment a car goes over the side of a treacherous mountain road as one daredevil leans from a window of the vehicle.

An eyewitness with a smartphone in the following car caught the incident on camera in the mountainous Tolipir area of the Pakistani state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The footage shows one man hanging from the window of the car in front, which had its hazard lights flashing, as it made its way along a narrow and poorly-maintained road on the snow-covered mountain.

Suddenly, the driver fails to notice an eroded section of the road and the car hits the hole and plummets over the side of the mountain.

Two people in the car died in the accident while another three are in hospital being treated for their injuries.

The car behind, from which loud music has been blasting out, comes to a halt as the shocked occupants take in what has just happened to their travelling companions.

The footage was later posted online where many viewers speculated that the driver must have been distracted by his passenger leaning through the side window.

Tolipir, near the town of Rawalakot in the Poonch District of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, stands at an altitude of 8,800 feet (2,682 metres) and is the highest peak in the area.

It offers spectacular views and is popular with visitors during the summer months but the roads are considered more dangerous between October and March.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir is a self-governing state, administered by Pakistan, which lies west of the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir.
