His relatives then called the police and some hours later the authorities received a phone call telling them a body had been found near the Benito Juarez motorway.

Reports say the authorities found Camacho’s body with signs of having been severely beaten, with signs of being hit all over his body, his hands showed he had been handcuffed and he had signs of having suffered severe trauma to his skull caused by a blunt object.

The investigation is ongoing and the authorities are yet to release a statement on the case. So far, police have not made any arrests and it is unclear if there are any suspects. The motive is also currently unclear.

He becomes the seventh journalist murdered in Mexico since Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador became the President of the country on 1st December 2018.

Obrador has presented the Mechanism of Protection for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists government programme in the National Palace this week.

The programme, first created in 2012, offers journalists panic buttons, bodyguards and surveillance systems if they are threatened in their work.
