HISTORY MAN: Japan’s Oldest Man Dies Aged 112

The oldest man in Japan – who saw the Hiroshima atomic bombing and fought in World War II, has died at the age of 112.

Mikizo Ueda, who was also Japan’s oldest known living war veteran, died in a nursing home in Nara on Friday, 9th September, according to local media reports.

His death was officially announced by the Nara Municipal Government on 13th September.

The Health Ministry now plans to celebrate the country’s current oldest living woman, Fusa Tatsumi, 115, in an official announcement on September 16th, according to local media reports.

Fusa Tatsumi lives in the city of Kashiwara, which is found about 20 kilometres away from central Osaka in Japan and is known for its warm summers and mild winters.

She reportedly worked in a family orchard where she grew plums, peaches and grapes until she was about 55 years old.

She also learned how to play a classical Japanese musical instrument known as an Okoto while studying flower arrangement and used to enjoy growing chrysanthemums in her spare time.

Japan has one of the highest life expectancy rates in the world according to data from the World Bank Group in 2020.

It has produced several individuals that Guinness World Records has recognised as some of the oldest people that have ever lived.

This includes Kane Tanaka, who was 119 when she died along with Jiroemon Kimura, who was 116.
