This is the moment an out-of-control bus smashes into a mechanics’ repair workshop and knocks a car off a hydraulic vehicle lift.

The bus then rolled backwards down a hill before the driver jumped out – leaving a passenger fighting to bring it under control – before it smashed into a restaurant.

Part of the incident was caught on CCTV cameras inside the workshop in Turkey’s biggest city of Istanbul.

The footage shows the bus drive smash straight into the hydraulic lift, knocking a people carrier off the top and onto the floor.

The clip ends with the bus starting to roll away in the opposite direction.

Eyewitnesses said the driver then jumped out, as he could not bring the bus under control, and a passenger bravely grabbed the wheel.

But he too failed to control the runaway bus and it crashed into a parked car and a restaurant.

Yusuf Yilmaz, the owner of the mechanics’ workshop who happened to be in the restaurant at the time, said the parked car saved him, and other diners, from being hit by the bus.

Mr Yilmaz said: “The bus came really fast. It crashed straight into our workshop. Then it rolled backwards and hit the restaurant. If it wasn’t for the car parked outside, four of us sitting in the restaurant would have been injured.”

He added the driver of the bus, who jumped off the vehicle as it careered towards the restaurant, fled the scene on foot.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, in the Esenyurt district on the European side of Istanbul Province, which is ongoing.
