This is the shocking moment a pet shop owner batters a yelping pooch with a bat in front of onlookers because the in-heat Akita had disappeared for several hours.

The incident took place in the city of Lanzhou in the northern Chinese province of Gansu when the cute Akita failed to come home and the unnamed pet shop owner grew worried.

According to reports, the woman started to strike the poor pooch with a bat while screaming at the animal: “You don’t like my home? Why don’t you just leave? Do you know how long I was looking for you? Do you know that it is me feeding you?”

A resident told local media: “The woman beats her dogs almost every day. The Akita is used for breeding and has given birth to several litters in the past.

“The dog is in heat and often goes off, but the woman doesn’t keep it on a lead and just beats it with a wooden board.

“There are many ways to train a dog. It must be afraid of her and wants to get away as much as it can.”

PETA Asia press officer Keith Guo told Asia Wire: “Maybe this is the best example of why China needs animal welfare laws. This woman, who has been reported to PETA as a dog breeder, should be in jail.

“People in China are as shocked by this as the rest of the world! PETA is working with locals to find the dog and get it to a loving home. We ask everyone to adopt pets from a shelter, and never buy them from shops or puppy farms.”
