This is the shocking moment a little dog is pulled along by a rope attached to a car and has its paws bloodied as it tries repeatedly to stop.

The incident was filmed by an eyewitness with a smarthone in another car in the city of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

The footage shows the dog running in the dust by the side of the road as fast as it can to keep up with the silver Toyota.

The dog comes close to falling on a number of occasions as it tries to stop the car, and each time, it just manages to stay on its feet to avoid being dragged along the tarmac.

The woman driver eventually pulls up by the side of the road where the driver travelling behind is able to confront her.

The second woman points out the dog is bleeding and offers to look after it herself.

But the Toyota driver refuses, claiming: “No, I found her, poor animal. I am not hurting her, I am trying to rescue her.”

The clip was later posted on social media and video-sharing platforms where it horrified animal lovers who urged police to track down and prosecute the woman.

Hilda Toledo Salinas, president of the ‘Help A Dog Friend of Oaxaca’ organisation, said it was not an unusual case.

She said: “It is common for people to walk their dogs like that, with the excuse of exercising them.”

Netizen ‘Maria Hernandez’ said: “The dog would be better without her help”, while ‘Alma Delia Hernandez’ added: “If she wanted to rescue the dog, why didn’t she put it in her car.”
