Two suspects have been arrested and are currently being quizzed about the shooting.

Bortuzzo was shot in the Italian capital Rome in the early hours of Sunday morning when he was reportedly looking for a bar in the Piazza Eschilo with his friends.

The teen had been training with champion cyclists such as Gregorio Paltrinieri and Gabriele Detti and was tipped to be a future star of the Italian national team.

The group tried to go into a bar but were not allowed in as a violent fight had broken out around half an hour earlier.

They decided to walk back home but as they were leaving the area Bortuzzo was shot by a bullet reportedly fired from a motorbike.

The teenager was rushed to Grassi di Ostia hospital before being transferred to the San Camillo-Forlanini Hospital.

The Director of the Neurology Department Alberto Delitala told reporters: “The possibility of recovering mobility in his legs is not possible with current medical knowledge.”

The swimmer’s father Franco Bortuzzo told reporters: “I am blindly trusting the police investigation. Manuel trained 19 kilometres a day, he is a calm boy who didn’t get into trouble. He is in Rome to fulfil his dream.”

The investigation is ongoing.
