A nanny who smothered an 11-month-old baby because the infant would not take a nap has avoided jail and will pay a fine of 3,400 GBP over the killing.

The daycare teacher surnamed Liao, 40, was charged with negligence and this week found guilty under Taiwan’s Protection of Child and Youth Welfare and Rights Act.

Distressing footage showed the child appearing lifeless after the clueless carer accidentally smothered him for 19 minutes.

A statement by the Department of Social Welfare in Taiwan’s capital of Taipei said Liao, who worked for the We Care Baby creche, would be fined 140,000 TWD (3,460 GBP) and have her full name released as a matter of public record.

This comes 10 days after Liao pinned the 10-month-old boy to the floor of his classroom in a bid to stop him from wiggling around and to make him fall asleep during nap time.

He was found by the day care’s cook and taken to hospital without vital signs before being officially pronounced dead on 1st April.

The social welfare department said Liao has 30 days to respond to their judgement before her name is formally made public.

Members of the public have expressed outrage at what they have perceived to be too lenient a punishment for the nanny.

Facebook user ‘Han Tsai-tsai’ wrote: “Is a life worth only 140,000 TWD?”

‘Chang Yi-chieh’ said: “What use is there in making her name public? Nobody knows what she looks like.”

‘Chung Cheng-chien’ added: “She could just change her name.”

The boy’s parents are still in private discussions with the creche over possible compensation.

The day care, meanwhile, continues to operate.
