Diego Maradona has slammed FIFA president Gianni Infantino for “betraying” people and trying to turn football into the Superbowl.

Maradona backed Infantino during his campaign but says the FIFA cheif has not spoken to him since.

The Argentine icon made the comments when speaking to the press after his team Doroado de Sinaloa’s 1-1 draw against Minero de Zacatecas.

Maradona was asked about Infantino’s plan to expand the number of teams in the World Cup and he said: “I want to clarify that I’m not a worker or operator for Infantino, I’m the coach of Dorados and I defend football. If Infantino wants to make this into a show, it’s a shame and I don’t understand it.

“He tries to copy the Americans, football is another thing, it isn’t the Super Bowl.

He added: “Infantino called me before the elections but after the elections he didn’t call me again. I’m very worked up, but before winning the elections many things were said which have not been fulfilled and that is betraying people. I don’t form part of that FIFA family.”

He added that Infantino wanted to speak to him “he has my telephone number”.

FIFA have approved an expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 by the 2026 tournament.
