The home owner received an alert on his mobile phone when the security alarm went off and he contacted his neighbours to check on the property.

The suspect realised he had been rumbled and tried to escape along the property’s roof, but he lost his footing and plummeted to the ground, injuring himself in the process.

He was then allegedly beaten by a group of residents armed with sticks.

The incident was filmed by a neighbour and shows the moment the burglar is chased along the rooftop while brandishing what appears to be a machete.

He confronts one angry resident before running away and losing his footing on the roof tiles.

The 28-year-old is then seen falling from the roof as the camerawoman shrieks.

The next scene shows dozens of local residents coming round to the property, many of them carrying sticks.

They appear to be brutally beating someone out of shot in the carport.

The bloodied suspect was handed over to the police shortly afterwards, according to local media.

Police spokesman Dennis Leong Soon Kuai said that he was found with a bag full of stolen items and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Reports said that he was with an accomplice who managed to get away.

The investigation continues.
