This is the tragic moment a five-year-old boy steps into what he believes is a puddle that has formed outside his home and drowns.

The incident was caught on the CCTV security cameras of a nearby house in southern Turkey’s Hatay Province.

The footage shows Mehmet Emin Gezer going out to play after heavy rains had caused flooding in the area.

The little boy is clearly fascinated by the pool that has formed close to his house.

But as he walks right down to the water’s edge to jump in the puddle, he immediately goes under the surface of the water.

With no adult watching and as he is unable to swim, Mehmet is unable to reach dry land and drowns.

Public prosecutors have launched an investigation into his death but have not yet commented on their findings.

Meanwhile, the little boy’s body has been released to his family so they could hold his funeral.

Hatay has a Mediterranean climate with very hot, long and dry summers but rains can be heavy in the winter and floods have been regular in recent years.

The province borders Syria which challenges Turkey’s sovereignty of Hatay. The dispute is generally peaceful but Syria has never renounced its claims.
