This was the scene after a hungry stray cat came across a tin of food and was so keen to enjoy every last scrap that it ended up with the can stuck firmly on its head.

A resident raised the alarm after spotting the cat with the can on its head in the backyard of a home in the town of Hanhofen in the south-western German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The man said he believed the cat found the half-full tin in a bin and got it stuck on its head while trying to lick the container clean.

He realised the poor cat could not see where it was going, and was effectively trapped in the backyard, so called an animal rescue centre.

Volunteers rushed to the scene to try to help the unfortunate feline but they could not remove the tin can which appeared to be stuck fast.

In the end, a veterinarian had to be called in to tranquillise the animal.

A spokesman for the animal shelter said: “As the animal was very anxious and therefore resisted rescuers, it had to be brought to a veterinarian.

“There, the animal was sedated and freed from the can.”

The cat, described as a middle-aged male looking slightly unkept and bewildered after its experience, was also neutered and tagged after being given a health check.

The cat was then brought to the animal shelter, in the nearby city of Speyer, where volunteers hope to find a family to give it a new home.
