This is the moment a brave young woman tries to fight off two muggers who jump out of a car to steal her bag and phone.

The incident was filmed by a CCTV camera in the coastal suburb of Muizenberg in the south-western South African city of Cape Town and uploaded to Twitter where it has been viewed over 107,000 times.

In the footage, a young woman wearing black is seen walking along the pavement while holding her phone in one hand and a mustard-coloured bag in the other.

Two men in a stationary silver car jump out and one of them snatches her bag before running back to the car as the other chases after the fleeing victim.

The mugger catches up with the woman and tries to wrestle the phone out of her hand.

Reluctant to give it up, the woman bravely fights back and at one point the phone is knocked into the air before crashing onto the pavement.

The thief rushes to pick it up and while he runs back the getaway car, the plucky woman nearly shoves him into the bushes.

Not done there, she then chases after the thieves and tries to keep the car door open, but they manage to speed off.

The victim is then seen putting her hands on her knees while trying to come to terms with what just happened.

At the end of the clip, the shocked woman sits on the kerb as several cars drive past without stopping to help.

Police spokesman Andre Traut confirmed that one suspect has been arrested while trying to board a train shortly afterwards.

The local authorities are investigating whether the suspect is connected to any other recent robberies in the beachside suburb.

There have been no further updates on his accomplice seen in the video.
