This is the moment a young boy escapes serious injury when the methane-filled drain he is holding a firework over suddenly blows up sending bricks and debris flying.

The blast, which was captured on CCTV, causes the boy to drop his pyrotechnics and run to his mother screaming: “Mum, I’m so scared!”

Footage from the town of Lindong in Bairin Left Banner in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region shows the boy holding fireworks in both hands as he walks up to the manhole cover.

He appears to intentionally hold the flames over the gaps in the metal cover and can be seen watching the sparks fall inside shortly before the blast happens.

As he leaves however the entire sewer erupts with one large and loud blast, which sends the manhole cover flying out of camera shot and the surrounding bricks being upturned.

The boy runs to his mum inside a nearby shop as shocked residents arrive to inspect the damage.

Reports say the incident happened at 7:07pm on 30th January, and that the boy luckily avoided injuries while escaping the blast.

The child is believed to have ignited a build-up of biogas in the sewers such as methane.

It is still unclear how much damage the boy caused, with officials expected to conduct an investigation.
