This is the shocking moment a two-year-old boy dangles from a second-floor balcony before he suddenly plummets to the ground and is caught by a heroic passerby.

The incident took place in the district of Viransehir in the southern Turkish province of Sanliurfa, and was filmed by stunned onlookers who posted the footage online.

According to local media, the young boy was home alone when he ventured onto the balcony and climbed over the rails.

However, he got into trouble and was left dangling for some time before growing tired and plummeting towards the ground.

Meanwhile, a large group of passersby had formed on the street under the balcony to try to catch the tot when he inevitably fell.

Reports said that residents even tried to break into the apartment after realising that no one was home, but were unable to get past the locked front door.

With no other option than to wait for the boy, aged two according to some media outlets, to grow tired and fall, onlookers waited underneath with opened arms to try to catch him.

As seen in the video footage, when the youngster fell he hit the first-floor balcony and span away from where he was originally going to land.

However, the crowd of people underneath managed to react quickly and one of them caught the boy – although this part is hard to see in the footage.

According to local media, the youngster was taken to a nearby hospital where it was determined that he had suffered a hip injury but was otherwise in a stable condition.

The local police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
