The daughter of a known Mafioso committed suicide because nobody attended her graduation after she confessed to friends who her father was.
Maria Rita carried the weight of her famous surname during her 24 short years alive. The Logiudice family, part of the Ndrangheta crime syndicate, is notorious in the region of Reggio Calabria in southern Italy. Several members are linked with cases of murder, extortion, robbery and other crimes.
Maria Rita’s father Giovanni is serving time in prison while two uncles and numerous cousins have pending cases against them.
Authorities believe that the family’s ties to mafia activity were a contributing factor to her shock suicide on 16th April.
Before celebrating her graduation party for finishing her economics course at the Mediterranea University, Maria Rita confessed to her boyfriend and several friends who her father was.
Subsequently, when nobody attended her party, she threw herself off the balcony at her home, leaving no farewell note behind.
The story shocked Italy, as Maria Rita was seen as an example of a young woman who wanted to escape her family’s business path and its links to the 'Ndrangheta. She regularly obtained excellent grades and took frequent trips to Frankfurt and Brussels with the intention of one day leaving Reggio Calabria.
Her family has requested an autopsy and the funeral will be postponed until the results are available. Family lawyer, Renato Russo, stated that the family wants to know about all the events and her state of mind prior to taking her own life.
