Beauty contest fans spotted some something eerie about Miss Russia 2017 – she is a doppelganger of Miss Universe 1961.

Blonde beauty Polina Popova from the Sverdlovsk Oblast region was crowned Miss Russia 2017 this weekend, beating 49 other hopefuls to be crowned the winner.

Netizens immediately picked up Ms Popova’s resemblance to another famed beauty, German Marlene Schmidt, who triumphed at Miss Universe beauty pageant in 1961.

The two models share the same face shape and delicate chin. Their eyebrows and smiles also seem identical, and side by side they could easily be mistaken for photos of the same person.

Netizen ‘French_Annie’ said: "They do look alike. Even their teeth are the same shape."

For the past ten years all of the winners of Miss Russia have had flowing brown locks so the 21-year-old blonde has made history with her shock win.

The model has now won the chance to represent her country at the Miss World and Miss Universe competitions, which are set to be held later this year.

A total of 50 participants from all over the country took part in the 25th Miss Russia beauty contest, with all of the budding hopefuls aged between 18 and 23.

Marlene Schmidt is to date the only German contestant to win Miss Universe.

She married and had a daughter with actor Ty Hardin, later divorcing him. She worked in the movie industry for many years as an actor, writer and producer and now lies in Saarbrucken in the western German state of Saarland.
