Newlywed Bodybuilding Couple Shot Dead In Mexico

A couple of fitness fanatics who had just tied the knot were shot to death while they travelled home from the gym.

Weightlifters Iliana Mendoza and Jorge A.C. had just married days before and were travelling home from the gym after a training session when they were shot by armed men on a motorbike.

The incident happened in the city of Cordoba, in the south-eastern Mexican state of Veracruz.

Eyewitnesses said two people on a motorbike pulled up alongside them and one pulled out a gun and shot them several times before riding away and leaving the couple lying on the ground injured.

The loved up pair, both 20, who were well known in the area for competing in bodybuilding competitions, claimed before their untimely deaths that they had been receiving death threats online through social media sites, though it has not been made public why.

The pair were shot and rushed to the nearby hospital. Iliana died upon arrival at the hospital but Jorge died at the scene after being shot in the neck.

Iliana had recently won the contest of Miss Bikini in the area, and Jorge would have participated in the contest "Men’s physique", a national contest, later this month.

Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, the secretary of the government, said police have "identified the aggressors and are going to hunt them."

The investigation is ongoing.
