A woman tortured her seven-year-old granddaughter by chaining her to a window and beating her with a metal bar, say police.
Police arrested the grandmother, whose name was not published, in the municipality of Ixtapaluca, in the central Mexican state of Mexico.
According to authorities the woman chained the girl to a window and repeatedly beat her with a metal bar for months.
The girl was rescued by authorities with injuries all over her body, including wounds to her hands where she had been chained to the window.
She also had several knife wounds to her neck, and was suffering from anaemia, mange and skull deformation, due to being hit with the metal bar.
Inside the grandmother’s house, the authorities also found other children, aged five, eight and nine, who prosecutors hope can be called on as witnesses.
They will receive attention from a local social service care unit.
It was not reported whether they too had been abused. They are reported to be relatives of the abused girl but it is not clear whether they are siblings.
What happened to their parents was not reported.
According to some neighbours, they had not seen the girl for so long that they asked the grandmother about her but she told them that authorities had taken her away.
The girl will have to undergo at least five plastic surgery operations to recover from wounds to her face and other parts of her body.
The grandmother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with unreported offences and sent to a preventive prison awaiting trial.
