A man has been arrested for having sex with his own wife after breaking into a safe house for victims of domestic abuse.
Mthabisi Mpofu, 24, was caught having sex with his wife Sikhanyiso Nkala in an office at the shelter in the city of Bulawayo in south-western Zimbabwe's Bulawayo Province.
Mpofu told a court that his wife had been staying at the safe house after they separated following a series of violent quarrels.
But he claimed that she contacted him, asking to see him and that they had sex after reconciling.
Prosecutor Taurai Hondoyemoto told the court that Mpofu broke into the safe house by climbing through an office window late at night.
He said the couple had sex in front of other victims of domestic abuse.
The alarm was raised by the shelter's programmes officer Angeline Munangwa who walked in on the couple while they were being intimate.
Ms Munangwa called a security guard who reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest.
Mpofu pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and public indecency and has been remanded in custody pending sentencing.
He told magistrate Mr Tinashe Tashaya: "On the day I committed this offence, I received a call from her saying that she wanted to see me.
"We spoke and we resolved the matter. Immediately after that, we slept together in the office.
"May this court be lenient when sentencing me. I think I was possessed by an evil spirit."
