This is the dramatic moment armed robbers use two sales assistants as hostages after robbing a jewellery store in a desperate bid to escape cops.

The gang of five robbers found the building surrounded by armed police officers as they finished their raid on a shop in the Argentinian capital city of Buenos Aires.

After tense negotiations with the cops, over the course of about 30 minutes, three of the robbers then edged their way out of the building, using two of the terrified staff – a man and a woman – as human shields.

Eyewitness footage shows the group edge around the corner of the building while armed police officers train their handguns on the robbers.

Eventually, the robbers realised they had no chance of escaping the cordon of cops surrounding them and gave themselves up without any of the hostages being badly hurt.

Meanwhile, more police had stormed the jeweller’s store and captured the other two robbers who immediately surrendered.

Two of the hostages needed medical attention for cuts and scratches they suffered when the robbers smashed the shop windows of the store.

The five suspects, whose names have not been released, are all under arrest and being questioned.

The police investigation into the robbery, on the ‘El Cronometro’ store in the Villa Devoto district of north-western Buenos Aires, is ongoing.
