This footage shows drivers losing control of their vehicles on a snow-covered road and crashing into one another almost in slow motion in a 14-car pile-up.

The chaotic crashes appear to happen as helpless motorists completely lose grip and watch their cars slide into other vehicles in the city of Hegang in north-eastern China’s Heilongjiang Province.

According to local authorities, the downhill section of the road became something of a “trap” following a period of heavy snow on 12th March.

A layer of thick ice added to the snowy road made it unpredictable for drivers who came in too fast and began “drifting” on the road.

Footage taken by nearby residents and some of the affected drivers themselves shows cars sliding uncontrollably down the road after one another.

The vehicles skid sideways and other drivers try in vain to stop the cars as they crash into the pile of vehicles, most of which seem to be taxis.

The police said a total of 14 cars were involved in the pile-up, but fortunately none of the owners was injured during the incident.

The authorities were still handling the accident at the time of writing and did not say whether they planned to close the road for public safety.
